07/15/2006 - Fluking on the Gambler
Well Schues, Schues Sr., and I met up on the Gambler for a 1/2 of fluking...at least that's what I think we were after! :P
Fishing was absolutely horrible, worst trip I've had all season. I do like the fact that the captain toughed it out in deep water trying to get us fish, I'd rather spend all day out there picking slow than sitting inshore catching shorts all day. The Gambler did great the day before (Friday), landing a bunch of big fish in the morning, we certainly thought we'd be hooking up some nice ones on Saturday morning.
Unfortuantely it didn't work out that way.
So there were the 3 of us, and it turns out my striper fishing buddy was on the boat as well. Bastard calls me on my cell at like 8:00AM and I'm like WTH is he calling me this early on a Saturday morning for. I answer and he's busting my balls about going fishing and it turns out he's like 25 feet away right around on the port side.
Ultimately, it wasn't even a slow pick...we had like hardly any shorts, just a few, several dogfish and a bunch of skates. Drift was slow, but nothing was doing even on bucktails, fluke just weren't there in numbers or weren't feeding. One guy caught a nice one out deep that won the pool, probably a 4lbish fish.
Schues wound up with 1 keeper, I had 1 keeper, Schues Sr, my striper buddy, and his two friends all had no keepers. Just a rough day out there.
Boat had to have 50+ fares...but less than 20 keepers I'd say.

Was a good trip although the fishing was pretty bad...until next time!
